With the down turn in the economy, many homeowners look for ways to spruce up their old house rather than buying a new home. Many people are doing so by renovating their dingy, cracked, and oil stained concrete garage floor.
Several types of garage flooring are now available to assist with that endeavor. They include paints, epoxies, tiles, and roll out mats. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages.
Paints and epoxies look the nicest, but require more time and work. They now come in many colors, and some brands even have metal flakes to add texture and depth to the overall effect. If not done properly, the coating could peel, bubble, and get black marks from the tires.
Prior to painting the floor needs to be swept, washed down, and cracks repaired. Then the concrete may need to be conditioned or a primer applied. Then apply at least one coat of epoxy or paint. Most people recommend epoxy over paint because of its durability. Epoxies can be purchased at Home Depot, Lowes, Amazon, and Wal-Mart. Some brands are Behr, Rust-Oleum, and Quikrete.
Other concrete floor coverings include tiles and roll out mats. These require less work than painting. Mats can be bought to fit the size of the garage floor or in four-foot strips. They require little prep work, and just need to be unrolled. A disadvantage to the rolls, if one spot gets damaged the entire roll has to be replaced. Tiles generally come in two-foot squares, and fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. They come in many colors, and can be mixed and matched for a checkerboard look. Rolls and mats are made of rubber or polyvinyl, and have resistance to many fluids leaked by the car.
Improve the appearance and value of the home by putting down a new garage floor covering.
