With the increase in crime, especially burglaries, an effective deterrent to criminals is becoming more and more critical in any residential or commercial building. An important part of any security setup is the entry door. Doors are designed as portals to allow legitimate entry. This fact also makes them the primary access point for unauthorized entry. Exterior metal doors allow good security and can also be customized to match any decor.
There are several areas to consider for security when choosing a door. The most secure door is useless if the frame, hinges, and hardware is weak. The door should be matched to the other parts for strength to provide the best security.
Hinges are what hold the door to the frame. Most exterior doors are attached with at least 3 sets of hinges for strength. These hinges should be at least 3 inches in length. They should be attached with heavy duty screws with at least one screw being long enough to penetrate all the way through the door frame and into to framing behind the door frame for added strength.
Door frames for metal doors can either be made from wood or metal. Metal frames are the stronger choice. A good fitting frame is essential not only for a good seal, but to prevent forced entry with a crowbar or other prying tool.
Handles and other hardware should also be considered for steel security doors. A good lockset will complement a door and a deadbolt lock is also a good addition for security. Deadbolts have sturdier locks and will help secure a door more than a normal lockset.
A well constructed metal door, along with well chosen components, will be an effective deterrent for any building. No door will be completely burglar proof. However, most thieves want to get in and out as quickly and quietly as possible. A metal door will add time and noise to an unauthorized entry and may convince a burglar to try elsewhere.
